A California-Inspired Minimalist House in Quebec

Built in 2013, this elegant and minimal residence is nestled in a beautiful 10-acre wooded lot just outside Magog, a town one-hour east of Montreal in Quebec. Designed down to its last detail by its current owner, according to its agent Johanne Meunier.
Its design, with its sharp edges, floor-to-ceiling windows and multiple pools, is California-inspired. "Mr. Begin participated in every step of the construction," Ms. Meunier said, "from drawing the plan to designing the doors to assisting with the physical construction."
The home features a substantial two-bedroom guesthouse, which according to Ms. Meunier is more like a smaller version of the main residence. Located off the beaten track, the property is a haven of privacy and woodland charm, just minutes from Magog town.
Stats
This 3,380-square-foot property has four bedrooms and three full bathrooms. There’s a two-bedroom main house and a smaller 880-square-foot, two-bedroom guesthouse, which sit on 9.16 acres of land. There are two 600 square foot garages, with one attached to each of the houses.
Amenities
The main house boasts two swimming pools, one on each floor. The sleek first-floor pool is both indoors and out, extending via a movable glass panel out onto the terrace from the expansive open-plan kitchen/dining/living area. The terrace also has a hot tub, while the larger second pool is on the ground floor.
The home has two gas fireplaces, an outdoor kitchen, and an atmospheric wine grotto on the first floor lined with natural stone. There is also a gym and a sauna, and the home is equipped with an eco-friendly geothermal heating system and underfloor heating.
There are 300 sugar trees on the land, and trails running through it which are perfect for scenic walks. The well-equipped chef’s kitchen includes a built-in steam oven and barbecue.
According to Ms. Meunier, the main house is structurally sound enough that another floor could easily be added atop the existing structure, which conveniently has a completely flat roof. She adds that there is also space for an elevator.
Neighborhood Notes
The property stands just five minutes from all the main services in Magog town, while still being located on a peaceful and secluded cul-de-sac. "There are only about four houses on the road, and this property is the last one, so there is no passing traffic," Ms. Meunier said.
Only a 10-minute drive from both Magog Lake and Mont-Orford National Park, the area has plenty to offer in terms of recreational activities, including Alpine and cross-country skiing, hiking and cycling, as well as the Memphrémagog Golf Club.
According to Ms. Meunier, the area also provides easy access to the U.S., with Newport, Vermont, only two hours by boat from Magog.
