Kobe takes bow as Philly, for once, shows him love

For a few seconds the Wells Fargo Center went dark and grew deafening Tuesday night, and when the lights had come back on and the sellout crowd's ovation had subsided and the echo of the public-address announcer's voice had faded, Kobe Bryant emerged a young man again.
There were boos, of course, inspired of that lingering and ironic resentment over a Lower Merion kid and Lakers great who seemed to cherish his Philadelphia roots only on those occasions he plotted to cut out the city's and the 76ers' hearts. But there was no way Bryant could hear them. The love for him was too loud, too long, too overwhelming, and in a sweet moment to savor during his 20th, his final, and probably his hardest season in the NBA, Bryant let it all wash over him, then turned it into fuel for the fleeting promise of one more transcendent night.
He came off a screen and flushed his first shot, a three-pointer from the top of the key. Then he hit his second, another three. He missed a mid-range shot, watched rookie point guard D'Angelo Russell corral the rebound and chest-pass the ball back to him, and drilled another three. All this, in the game's first 90 seconds, in his first game since announcing that he would retire at season's end, in his last game in his hometown. Had Bryant kept up that pace, the ghost of John Updike would have had to write the game story.
He did not keep it up. He could not. He missed 18 of his final 22 shots. He finished with 20 points as the Sixers ended their 28-game losing streak, 103-91, continuing the pattern that has played out over his 14 games this season: lots of shots, lots of misses, lots of remembrances of who he used to be - the five championships, the two scoring titles, the 2008 MVP award - and no longer is.

Dallas Cowboys at Miami Dolphins game preview

Peter Senior becomes the oldest player to win the Australian Masters at age 56

Peter Senior has again proven age is no barrier by storming home to win the Australian Masters 20 years after winning his last gold jacket.
The 56-year-old held off a late challenge from unheralded Sydneysider Andrew Evans to claim his third Masters title after also winning at Huntingdale in 1991 and 1995.
Senior, who started the day in Melbourne with a share of third, looked home and hosed with a three-shot lead with three holes to play but then bogeyed the 17th.
However, Evans also dropped a shot on the tricky par 5 hole to end a two-hole birdie run and then also bogeyed the last.
Senior finished the tournament at eight-under after his final round three-under 68.
He became the oldest player to win the Australian Masters, eclipsing the mark set by 50-year-old American Gene Littler in 1980.
Evans finished on six under, tied for second with American amateur Bryson DeChambeau and John Senden.
Adam Scott finished fifth, four shots behind Senior.
Michael Long was the best of the Kiwis, carding a final round four under 67 to finish the tournament on two-under in a share of 12th place.
Of the other New Zealanders to make the cut, Daniel Pearce finished one-over, one shot ahead of Gareth Paddison with Harry Bateman on five-over and Kieran Muir two shots further back.

Oklahoma survives: TCU's late TD can't force OT after failed 2-point try

Oklahoma left the field at Memorial Stadium on Saturday night a little more banged up than it would like heading into Oklahoma State week, but still with a Big 12 title on the line after a 30-29 win against TCU.
The final score does not indicate the ups and downs of the game's flow, with both teams getting different results from mid-game quarterback changes. For Oklahoma, the loss ofBaker Mayfield to a head injury brought the offense to a crawl in the second half. If Samaje Perine (26 carries, 188 yards and one 72-yard touchdown) couldn't get the first downs, the Sooners' defense was back on the field after a brief rest.
TCU switched from Foster Sawyer to Bram Kohlhausen after three interceptions from the redshirt freshman. Kohlhausen likely benefited from having better opportunities, particularly late in the game thanks to TCU's defense. But Kohlhausen did not throw any interceptions and the Horned Frogs rode a great night from running back Aaron Green (24 carries, 127 yards).
Kohlausen also put the Horned Frogs in a position to win, tossing a touchdown pass to Emanuel Porter with 51 seconds remaining, before the upset bid was ended on the two-point try by Steven Parker's pass deflection.

Matthew McConaughey hosts SNL

Although Matthew McConaughey has been imitated countless times on Saturday Night Live, it’s been 12 years since he himself last hosted.
Saturday will mark his first return to Studio 8H since 2003, when the Dixie Chicks performed as musical guest and McConaughey had just released How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Since then, he’s left the romcoms behind, and post-McConaissance, he’s taken to more dramatic roles, like Rust Cohle in True Detective and himself in those philosophical Lincoln ads. While he doesn’t have any big movies coming up this holiday season, he’ll next appear in Gus Van Sant’s drama The Sea of Trees, about a man who travels to Japan’s Suicide Forest, and the Civil War drama The Free State of Jones.
